Bhubaneswar, Sept 5: To ensure attendance of students in skill training institutes, the state government has decided to implement biometric attendance in all government-run industrial training institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics from the next academic year.
Senior officials had observed that the attendance of students is very poor and irregular during a tour to various institutes.
The decision to go for biometric attendance was taken to ensure a healthy academic atmosphere and inculcate discipline.
Technical education and training director Balwant Singh has recently directed the principals of all government ITIs, polytechnics and skill development centres to install sufficient number of biometric attendance machines by September 15.
“The principal shall install the machines at different locations in the academic building for smooth attendance of the students without crowding in one location and same shall notify among the group of students of size 150 to make their attendance in the machine installed in a specific location,” Singh said in his letter to the principals.
Principals have been instructed to ensure attendance of students twice a day – once when entering the institute and then at the time of leaving.
The principals have been further instructed to assign a faculty from IT laboratory as administrator, who would remain in-charge of the system and submit reports to government every month.
Earlier, the government had asked the institutes to ensure biometric attendance for teachers and officials of the institutes.
