Biswajit emerges champion

Bhubaneswar: Biswajit Nayak of Khurda emerged champion in the Orissa State U-25 Chess Championships with 6.5 points after the completion of the seventh and the final round at the Swami Vivekananda Institute in Pokhariput here Monday.

Ansuman Samal of Cuttack emerged runner-up with six points. Sambit Panda of Khurda and Nilsu Patnaik of Cuttack also garnered six points each, but were relegated to third and fourth positions respectively on the basis of their Buchhollz tie-breaker score. Biswanath Samantray of Khurda finished fifth with 5.5 points.

The top four players of this meet will represent Orissa in the National U-25 Open Chess Championships to be played at Andaman and Nicobar, July 13-20.

Other prizes: (U-7) Rohit Mallick (Khurda), Ashutosh Mishra (Cuttack); (U-9) Aditya Ranjan Das (Khurda), Adarsh Anubhab (Khurda); (U-11) Pratyush Mohapatra (Khurda), Sujyot Mohanty (Cuttack); (U-13) Rudranarayan (Puri), Jagdish Barik (Puri).

Match drawn

The two-day cricket match between Town Club and Greens Academy ended in a draw at the Town Club Ground here Monday.

In reply to Town Club’s first innings score of 257/9, Greens Academy were in deep trouble as they were reduced to 47 for the loss of seven wickets when rain interrupted play leading to the abandonment of the game.

Suman Moharana (4/19) and Manas Das (3/23) wreaked havoc with the ball for Town Club. Omkar Mohanty (12) and Aditya Arya (12) of Greens Academy were the only two batsmen to manage double-digit scores. Both the teams shared one point each.
