There are certain conditions and rules to live anywhere in the world. Every country or province has its own rules. But, how would you feel if you needed to remove a body part to live in your hometown.
Though, it might sound shocking, it is true. In the same way, there is a part of the world where to live, one has to undergo abdominal surgery and it is necessary to remove the appendix.
Actually, the village we are talking about is Villa Las Estrellas. It is a Chilean town and research station on King George Island within the Chilean Antarctic claim, the Chilean Antarctic Territory, and also within the Argentine and British Antarctic claims.
This village lacks basic facilities like transport and proper healthcare facilities. Nevertheless, general stores, banks, schools, small post offices, hospitals and other public facilities have been made according to the need of the people of the village. Children get basic education in schools, but the treatment in hospitals is very superficial.
But it is the weird rules in this village that makes it different from others. As of 2018 all residents, including children, are required to have their appendixes removed before coming to Villa Las Estrellas as a safety precaution as healthcare services are limited.
It is the larger and one of only two civilian settlements on Antarctica (the other being Argentina’s Esperanza Base). It has a summer population of 150 and a winter population of 80.
This village is densely populated and is covered with snow throughout the year. To get here one has to use trucks or rafting boats. Vilas Las Estrellas also does not have public transport facilities. Although the temperature here is minus Celsius, but those living in Antarctica consider the village very hot.
