Bhubaneswar: BJD Rajya Sabha member Santrupt Misra Saturday questioned the Centre’s proposed charges on UPI transactions above Rs 2,000, warning that the move could burden small traders and consumers.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Misra said UPI had transformed digital payments in the country and helped widen financial access. He asked what data and assessment had prompted the government to set Rs 2,000 as the threshold, particularly when small traders operate on thin margins.
Misra also sought to know what had changed since the Centre said in April 2025 that no charges were being levied on UPI transactions.
Any additional cost could eventually be passed on to consumers and discourage digital payments, he said. The BJD leader sought details of the number and value of transactions likely to be affected, the proposed charges, their beneficiaries and the mechanism for distributing the funds.
