BJP activists hurl eggs at BMC office

Bhubaneswar: Protesting ‘poor performance’ of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), the BJP activists Friday hurled eggs at the municipal office.
Hundreds of BJP activists led by Bhubaneswar district president Harekrushna Khuntia assembled outside the BMC office here at Kalpana Square and staged a demonstration protesting ‘corruption’ and ‘inefficiency’ of the civic body.
The situation turned tumultuous when the police personnel tried to stop the protesters from entering the office. The saffron party workers had a scuffle with police personnel and later barged into the office by breaking the barricades.
The protesters hurled eggs at the office building during the demonstration. However, the cops later brought the situation under control.
“Corruption is rampant in the corporation. More contractors than patients were benefited from the hospitals run by the BMC. The slum dwellers are not getting land pattas,” Khuntia alleged.
All the work remains only in pen and paper, the BJP leader alleged.
Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena said, “Everyone has the right to ask for information through the RTI Act. One can enquire into anything from the office. Bhubaneswar has been declared as the No 1 Smart City in India and best planned city. Rome was not built in a day. We need cooperation of all to develop this city.”
People would not accept the false allegations made by the BJP, he added. On egg attack, the mayor said, “Let the people decide it.”
