Bhubaneswar, July 27: Concerned at the increasing number of accidents, the state government has directed various departments and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to identify “black spots” which are vulnerable in terms of road accidents across the state.
“We have directed the chief engineers of NHAI (Orissa), roads and buildings and the rural development to furnish the details of accident-prone areas identified in their respective jurisdiction. The engineers have also been asked to give the details of steps, if taken, to curb road mishaps,” an official of the transport and commerce department told Orissa POST Monday.
After receiving the detailed information, the department will examine it and take further steps so that the loss of human lives in mishaps can be checked.
“The department will find out the possible reasons behind the mishaps at that particular area. If there is any technical problem in the road construction, we will recommend the concerned agency to divert the road at that point or put up large signboards at both ends of the ‘black spot’,” the official said.
Besides, the government is organising mass awareness campaigns about the different signals and rules to be followed while driving.
Recently, the state government had decided to make it mandatory to sell helmets along with all new two-wheeler in the state. The transport and commerce minister Ramesh Majhi asked the transport commissioner to direct all two-wheeler dealers in the state about the decision. “If any seller violates the rule, the trade licence will be cancelled,” Majhi had said.
