Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has erected more than 60 colourful hoardings across the city as part of an awareness drive to improve the deteriorating sanitation levels in the capital city and persuade citizens to use public toilets.
“We launched the drive last week to educate the public about the importance of keeping the streets clean to improve the hygiene standards in the city, “said BMC communication consultant Nihar Ranjan Patra.
This is the first time that the civic body is conducting such a massive drive, said Patra.
BMC will conduct door-to –door campaigning in residential colonies and slums, where they will hand out information brochures on safe sanitation practices, as part of its outreach programme said Patra. About 10,000 individual latrines will be constructed this year and the civic body has received 23,000 applications for this so far, BMC officials said. The names of all the eligible beneficiaries would be announced within a month, after completing the verification process, said the officials.
“Over 500 tonne of solid waste is being generated in the city every day,” said BMC information officer Gopal Panigrahi.
Every year the civic body spends Rs 40-45 crore, which accounts for 10 per cent of the cash-strapped civic body’s annual budget, for clearing the massive amounts of garbage.
