Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will deploy more than 200 battery-operated vehicles across the City for door-to-door waste collection, an official said.
The decision was taken at the 44th general council meeting of the BMC, chaired by Mayor Sulochana Das, at Ekamra Hall of the civic body headquarters in Bhubaneswar Monday.
The meeting discussed various works approved by the standing committees, the implementation of decisions taken at the previous meeting, questions raised by corporators, and proposals submitted by corporators and officials of different divisions. A major focus of the meeting was public safety and civic infrastructure.
The BMC directed TP Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL) to immediately replace electricity poles that are in a dangerous condition. Das also directed the BMC’s sub-divisional officers to ensure prompt repair of non-functional streetlights.
It was also decided that contractors quoting 40 per cent or more below the estimated tender value would have to prepare and submit a work plan before commencing the work. The meeting also reviewed the condition of the Yatri Niwas and the Kalyan Mandap at Chandrasekharpur, which were reported to require renovation.
Das said the ongoing road work at Paikarapur and the temporary ponds dug for idol immersion would also be reviewed. Ahead of the upcoming puja season, the civic body discussed providing Rs 5 lakh to each ward for road repair works.
The environment wing was also directed to trim overgrown tree branches along various roads. “To strengthen sanitation and door-to-door waste collection, it was decided that more than 200 battery-operated vehicles will be deployed across the City. The vehicles will be used for household-level waste collection, with the agencies engaged for the service responsible for their purchase and maintenance,” an official said.
