Bravery award for Class VII girl

Bargarh: The 12-year-old wonder girl, Manini Budeka, a Class VII student of Dulampur Upper Primary School under Atabira block in Bargarh district, who had saved a three-year-old boy from drowning in a pond, has been nominated for a bravery award.

The girl will be felicitated for her courageous act on the occasion of the Independence Day. The District Collector will felicitate the girl for her brave act after the parade ceremony in Bargarh George High School ground.

Even as Manini, a resident of Dulampur, does not understand that she has given a new lease of life to the infant, the joy of her family members and villagers knew no bound after the news.

“Manini has made the village and the district proud. I feel proud to be the father of Manini,” said the girl’s father. “I’m excited to meet the District Collector and collect the award,” the girl quipped.

The incident occurred April 11, 2018. Yash, 3, was swept away while he was taking bath in a pond. Manini, who was also playing near the pond, saw the boy slip and fall into the water. Without wasting time, Manini ran to the pond and jumped into the neck-deep water without a second thought. With much effort, she saved the infant from drowning.

After dragging the boy to the bank, Manini screamed for help and soon locals gathered around and took the boy to a local community health center (CHC). He was then referred to Burla-based VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR).

After undergoing treatment for some days, there was improvement in the boy’s health. Meanwhile, the girl’s bravery was highly appreciated by the locals. Her presence of mind had given a new lease of life to the boy.

Praising for her exceptional display of bravery, the villagers had earlier requested the administration to recommend Manini’s name for the bravery award.
