Breach in irrigation project inundates 40 acres of farm

Koksara: Over 40 acres of farmland were inundated after an embankment of the Rajamunda irrigation project breached in Kalahandi district late Wednesday night.

Farmers who were expecting a good harvest this year were shocked out of their wits over the incident. They had sown paddy seeds on their land and the seeds had germinated in most parts and some of them had also blossomed into saplings, they rued.

Zilla Parishad member Biranchi Narayan Panda said the embankment develops breaches at the particular point every year. He said authorities repair the breach every year instead of coming up with a permanent solution.

He demanded that the minor irrigation department provide compensation to the farmers for the loss. When contacted, assistant engineer of the Koksara minor irrigation department Dinabandhu Sahu said a probe will be conducted into the matter. PNN
