Bhubaneswar, Dec 3: Jiten Sarangi scripted the biggest upset in the ongoing 22nd State Snooker and Billiards Championships defeating defending snooker champion Jeet Kishore Das at the Vintage Club here Thursday.
In a tense encounter which went down to the wire, Jiten prevailed 4-3 (56-44, 41-57, 46-57, 41-51, 62-20, 62-51, 47-21). After falling behind 1-3, Jiten reeled off three frames in a row to emerge victorious.
Other results: Sidharth Sen bt Mishal Swain 3-0, Nishant Biswal bt Indrajeet Sarangi 3-1, Subrat Das bt Satyajyoti Mohanty 3-0.
Three points for orissa
Orissa bagged three points by virtue of the first innings lead as their U-16 East Zone Vijay Merchant Trophy game against Tripura ended in a draw Sunday at the Bidanasi Ground in Cuttack.
Tripura resumed their second innings from the overnight score of 72/1 and declared on 248 for the loss of five wickets. BB Das (168, 295b, 23×4) hit a brilliant century and he was ably supported by RN Chakma (63, 192b, 8×4, 1×6). Rajesh Mohanty (3/63) again bowled well for Orissa. The hosts were 25 without loss when stumps were called.
Dhoribahal enter final
Dhoribahal entered the final in the rural segment of the Inter-City Gold Cup hockey tournament after scraping past Joketa 1-0 in their semifinal encounter at Rourkela, Thursday.
Kukuda and Kahupani made it to the semifinals after winning their respective quarterfinal matches. Kukuda scraped past Shaktinagar 3-2 while Kahupani thrashed Jalda 4-0.
In the professional category, SAIL Hockey Academy, Sports Hostel Bhubaneswar, Panposh Sports Hostel (PSH) sub-junior and junior teams registered victories. SAIL scraped past Bhubaneswar XI 5-4, Sports Hostel, Bhubaneswar triumphed over Sundargarh Sports Hostel 5-3 and PSH sub-juniors drubbed Nalco 6-1. PSH Junior blanked Biramitrapur 2-0 in another lop-sided match.
