Campaign van driver held for stabbing garage owner

Keonjhar: A man was arrested and another detained in connection with the stabbing of a garage owner Saturday evening at Katalapasi village under Jhumpura police station limits in Keonjhar district, police said Sunday.

The arrested accused was identified as Kailash Chandra Mohanta, while his father has been detained by the police. The injured garage owner was identified as Dharanidhar Mohanta of Katalpasi village. The main accused identified as Purendra Mohanta, the driver of the campaigning van is yet to be arrested.

Sources said that Dharanidhar sustained critical injuries when the accused, Purendra, who drives a political party’s campaigning van, stabbed him in his belly. The campaign vehicle was parked in front of Dharanidhar’s garage at Katalapasi at around 7 pm, Saturday.

A minor argument ensued between Dharanidhar and Purendra over parking the vehicle in front of the shop. It later escalated into a fight, following which Purendra called the vehicle owner Kailash and his father to the spot. During the fracases, Purendra suddenly stabbed Dharanidhar with a knife. In the meantime, locals overpowered Purendra and tied him to a pole before ransacking the vehicle.

On being informed, police rushed to the spot and took an injured Dharani and Purendra to the hospital. The police later nabbed Kailash and his father from his residence and took them to police station for questioning.

After interrogation, Kailash was arrested while his father was detained by the police. Two cases were registered in this connection over separate complaints lodged in the police station. Purendra is yet to be arrested as he is undergoing treatment, said Sambari Hansda, IIC of Jhumpura police station. Further investigations are on.
