Cuttack: A gang of thieves looted the Canara Bank branch at Uttaran village near Adaspur area in the district Saturday night while in another incident miscreants made a failed attempt to loot the Gochara-based SBI branch near Mahulpali in Sambalpur district.
In the first instance, the matter came to light when the security and cleaning staff reported for work in the morning Sunday. The main gate as well as the lockers in the bank was found broken.
According to the police, the desperadoes made away with coins worth `47,000 and the CCTV monitor at the Canara Bank. They also tampered with the computer terminals in the bank and removed the CCTV footages of their activities inside. A police team along with sniffer dogs and a scientific team were pressed into service for a probe.
Police suspect the gang entered the premises by breaking open the main gate late at night. “We have started an investigation. Efforts are on to identify and arrest the culprits on the basis of the footage from the CCTV cameras installed in the nearby areas. We are also conducting raids at different places in the district to catch hold of the gang,” police said.
In the second instance, thieves made a failed attempt to loot the Gochara-based SBI branch near Mahulpali, off Kuchinda in Sambalpur district Saturday night.
The gang, using a gas cutter, broke open the gates of the bank and entered the building to open the locker. They failed in their attempt and fled, leaving behind the gas cutter and other instruments used in the crime.
Bank officials and the police reached the bank later, and began a probe.
