Bhubaneswar: The Crime Branch (CB) of Odisha Police has arrested a couple from Angul in connection with an online investment fraud involving over Rs 1.55 crore, official sources said Friday.
According to CB sources, the victim approached the Cyber Police Station in April last year, alleging fraud. “Unidentified cyber fraudsters initially contacted the victim through social media and later added him to WhatsApp groups named ‘Stock Market Pioneers’ and ‘VIP IVI Service Team570’.
The fraudsters promised high and assured returns through a fictitious online trading platform and provided links to the victim. Believing the assurances, the victim transferred a total of Rs 1,55,66,000 from a single bank account to seven different accounts in multiple transactions, as instructed by the fraudsters,” the investigating agency said. “Soon, a case (13) was registered April 19, 2025 under Sections 318(2), 319(2), 336(2), 336(3), 338, 340(2), 61(2) and 3(5) of BNS 2023 and 66-C and 66-D of the IT Act. And a probe was launched,” it said.
A team led by inspector Namita Kumari Sahoo analysed transactions and other digital evidence. “This led the team to Angul, where it successfully identified and arrested Himansu Prasad Karna and his wife Sailendri Karna of Rajkishorepada,” the agency said.
