CCTV cameras on bridges soon

Cuttack: The Commissionerate Police (CP) has decided to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras on all bridges in and around the Silver City to keep a tab on anti-social elements and open a modern control room to manage them.
Sources said twin city Police Commissioner YB Khurania has recently directed the Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police Akhilesh Singh to conduct a survey for the CCTV project.
The Traffic Management Committee of the CP had decided to install CCTV cameras on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Bridge over Kathajodi River and Madhusudan Bridge over Mahanadi at its April 30 meeting.
CP sources said robbers are targeting commuters on bridges in and around the city. Besides, criminals often choose Netaji Subhas Bridge and Madhusudan Bridge as their hideouts after committing crimes.
A few miscreants had fired at Khurda resident Kartik Khatei February 6 and snatched `20,000 from him on a flyover at Telengapentha on the city outskirts. Police are yet to trace them.
Similarly, a few unidentified persons had killed one auto-rickshaw driver on Birupa Bridge near the city two years ago.
The CP has failed to arrest the accused. It is learnt the CP has finalised a plan to install CCTV cameras on all bridges over Mahanadi and Kathajodi in the initial phase. “We will constitute a committee to conduct a survey for finalising suitable places on the bridges to install CCTV cameras. The project will help us keep an eye on criminals fleeing the city after committing crimes,” Singh said.
