Bhubaneswar, March 11: The Union ministry for road transport and highways has approved the state’s proposal for construction of a second bridge over river Brahmani near Rourkela on the Biramitrapur-Barkote section of NH-143.

This decision was taken after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Union tribal affairs minister Jual Oram urged Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari to set up the bridge.

“As the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) took up four-laning of the Biramitrapur-Barkote NH, construction of the new bridge is necessary. Keeping this in mind, Gadkari has assured me that the work order for the upgradation of the highway will be awarded before this month end,” Oram said.

This will cater to the need of Rourkela and nearby localities, said the Sundargarh MP.

In December, Patnaik urged Gadkari to sanction funds for the bridge and take it up as a standalone project to save time.
