Puri, June 10: A man was killed and his relative seriously injured when two bike-borne youths opened fire at them to loot a gold chain on the Bhubaneswar-Puri National Highway in Puri district Friday afternoon, the police said.
The deceased was identified as Manoranjan Behera of Baghchai village in Jajpur district.
The relative, Renubala, sustained injuries in the incident that took place near Satsankha, when the couple was on their way to Puri.
The two bike-borne youths intercepted the couple and tried to snatch a gold chain from Renubala, police said.
As Manoranjan opposed their bid, the youth fired twice. One bullet hit Manoranjan on the chest. The man died on the spot, while Renubala was shifted to the Puri
district headquarters hospital for treatment.
Police personnel from nearby Satyabadi police station are investigating the case.
“We have recovered an empty cartridge from a place about 100 meters from the attack site. We also suspect it could be a pre-planned murder,” said Mrutunjay Swain, inspector in-charge of Satyabadi police station.
Puri SP Sarthak Sarangi said police have intensified patrolling and are taking steps to nab the two miscreants who fled from the place after killing the man.
“The youths followed us from a distance and opened fire as my husband resisted the snatching of the gold chain from me. One bullet missed me. Another hit Manoranjan,” Renubala said.
