Chain snatchers stab man to death

Nuapada: In a shocking incident a man was killed after chain-snatchers stabbed him when he resisted their bid to snatch his wife’s gold chain. The family was on its way to witness Durga Puja Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Bhagbat Bihari, (38), of Kalyanpur under Khariar Road Janka police limits in this district.

Sources said Bihari hailed from Mohatam Tora village and was staying at Kalyanpur village in his in-laws’ house after marrying Sabita.

The incident occurred while Bihari was on his way on a bike to witness Durga Puja at Biromal village along with his wife and children Tuesday night. They were intercepted by two armed men near a bridge and they chased them on their bikes.

The two stopped Bihari, held him at knife-point and asked his wife to remove her gold ornaments and hand it over to them. Fearing for her life Sabita handed over her ornaments to them.

However, the snatchers stabbed Bihari after he intervened and fled with the chain. On hearing Sabita’s screams locals rushed to the spot and took Bihari to the Biromal primary hospital. After preliminary treatment he was shifted to district headquarters hospital as his condition had worsened. However, he died while undergoing treatment late in the night.

The police have launched a probe. Teams were deployed at all check posts and investigations are on, IIC Satyaranjan Pradhan said, adding that the snatchers would be arrested soon. PNN
