London: EPL title-contenders Chelsea and Arsenal scripted narrow 1-0 victories over Southampton and Newcastle United in English Premier League matches played Saturday evening.
Chelsea rode on a Marcos Alonso’s free-kick to earn full three points against middle-run Southampton at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile a sensational strike by Mesut Ozil helped the Gunners shoot down Newcastle.
Ozil fired in a perfect volley from the edge of the box that was so beautiful in technique and elegance that it had the entire stadium applauding. However, then the game degenerated into a scrappy midfield battle and what started so beautifully finished ugly. But in the end, it was Ozil’s brilliance which helped Arsenal end their three-game winless run and brought the smile back on Arsene Wenger’s face.
Meanwhile Chelsea coach Antonio Conte must have been wondering about the narrow margin of victory. The Blues had the best of chances and could have easily won by a tennis score. But in the end they had to go home with only one showing on the scoresheet.
