Chit fund victims lock tehsil office

Bahanaga: Upset over a long wait for refund, scores of chit fund victims staged a demonstration near the tehsil office here in Balasore district Saturday and locked its gate. Police rushed to the spot and tried to convince the agitating people.

The tehsil officials had announced through public address systems in all the villages two days ago that small depositors in chit fund firms who had submitted affidavits at the Chit Fund Commission should submit the photocopies of deposit certificates, their bank passbooks and Aadhaar cards at the tehsil authorities to receive their money back Saturday.

Hundreds of small depositors from Bahanaga, Khantapada, Anji, Sahaspur, Baipada, Panapana, Dandaharipur, Gopalpur, Karanjabindha, Saudi, Kharasahaspur, Kalyani, Nuapur and Odashala gathered with necessary documents at the tehsil office in the morning.

Tehsil officials received documents from some of the depositors whose names were found in a list while others were turned away.

Tension ran high over the matter with the depositors shutting the gate and locking it. Police from Gopalpur outpost rushed to the spot and convinced the depositors and unlocked the gate.
