Bhubaneswar, Dec 23: A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court here Tuesday rejected the bail application of former Micro Finance Private Ltd managing director (MD) Durga Prasad Mishra and sent him to judicial custody till January 8. Mishra was taken to Jharpada jail soon after the proceedings. CBI senior counsel Kali Charan Mishra and Mishra’s counsel Tapas Acharya presented their arguments before the court.
Acharya urged the court to grant bail to Mishra citing his ‘illnesses’. He said Durga Prasad had a bypass surgery in July this year and required a routine health check-up.
However, CBI senior counsel Kali Charan opposed the argument put forward by Mishra’s counsel stating that the agency had conducted regular health check-ups on him.
Kali Charan argued that since the CBI was still in the process of probing the larger conspiracy in the case, Durga Prasad should be denied bail at this stage.
The former Micro Finance MD was taken to the Capital Hospital Tuesday morning for a medical check-up before being produced in the court. Mishra preferred to avoid the query by host of media persons present at the hospital premises.
Mishra was absconding for around nine months before he was arrested by CBI December 14. Crime Branch (CB), the previous investigating agency, had frozen `78-crore bank balance of the company, whose license was cancelled by Reserve Bank of India in 2012. Micro Finance Private Ltd is one of the 44 chit fund companies being probed by the Central agency.
