Bhubaneswar: The state capital has been ranked 24th among 73 cities in the country in the Swachh Sarvekshan (cleanliness survey) 2016 conducted by the Union ministry of urban development as part of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM).
Results of the survey announced by Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu at National Media Centre in New Delhi Monday said that Bhubaneswar scored 1,279 points to secure the 24th rank. Mysore bagged the top position with 1,749 points in the national survey followed by Chandigarh (1,716) and Tiruchirappalli (1,715).
While Dhanbad in Jharkhand stood at the bottom of the list with 464 points, Cuttack was placed at the 59th rank with a score of 925, said officials.
A detailed survey was conducted by a group of SBM members in the slums in Bhubaneswar, at the Unit I and Unit II markets and the public toilets in the city last month, said Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials.
“This is an interesting development for our city, and we will conduct more intensive information, education and communication (IEC) activities in the coming days to dissuade people from open defecation and make the temple city more livable, clean and green,” said BMC commissioner Krishan Kumar. PNN
