Bhubaneswar, July 27: Educational institutions and voluntary and non-voluntary organisations across Bhubaneswar paid tributes to former president APJ Abdul Kalam on his first death anniversary, Wednesday.
BJEM school, Sai International school, MBS Public School, and Kendriya Vidyalayas besides state government run schools offered floral tribute to the former leader at events organised by the respective institutions. The institutions also organised activities such as debates, poetry recitation and speeches to commemorate Kalam’s contributions to India.
Shadashiva Mishra, the headmaster of Unit-VI government Boys’ High school said: “Dr Kalam is alive in the hearts of the people of India. His contributions to science will inspire budding scientists of the country. Students here express their love and respect for our former president. India can never replace the loving person and eminent scientist in future.”
Students, too, remembered Kalam’s love and affection for students. “His was friendly with students and that has made him popular. We never had a president and a scientist who was very close to students,” Hrishikesh Nayak, a student, said.
APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial, in turn, conducted a meeting at Idcol auditorium to commemorate contributions of India’s Missile Man.
People from different walks of life also paid virtual tributes to the former president on social media platforms.
They remembered the scientist, teacher and inspirational leader and shared his words and pictures.
Leaders and intellectuals tweeted words of Kalam such as “When I am dead, do not declare a holiday. Instead, work a day extra”.
Known as People’s President, Kalam passed away July 27 at Shillong. He had collapsed during a speech at the Indian Institute of Management. He was 83.
