Many of us have a phobia towards science. It triggers panic, fear or simply seems dull to a handful. But, there are also some, who eat science, breathe science and live science—literally! City girl, Mahamaya Mishra—class XII student of Kendriya Vidyalaya—is one among the true science lovers. Such is her passion for the logic-based subjects that she had been working on several scientific projects since her Class VIII days. Today, her love for science has brought fame to the little genius. Her scientific projects, designed to help citizens of our country, got global exposure. She had recently attended a month-long workshop with Japanese scientists. She has also won Young Astronomer Talent Search. She is the only girl from the state to receive an award from the Council of Science and Industrial Research (CSIR) for her innovative ideas on waste management. Orissa POST interacted with the budding scientist. Here are the excerpts:
Tell us about the project for which you were awarded. My project was on polythene waste management.
I have designed a device that can generate electricity by combustion of plastic waste.
What did you do in Japan?
It was a life-changing experience as interacted with famous scientists and astronauts. I was amazed to see atoms, which are not visible to the naked eyes. This apart, I met with an advanced robot at an institute. The robot can do everything like humans. In addition, I got answers of my questions related to cosmology from the scientists.
Tell us about the acknowledgements for your projects— life in Mars and solid waste management.
Well, these are actually patterns. But, if you want to claim these as your latest and innovative ideas, then you have to fill an application and submit it. I am glad that my projects were acknowledged as the best ideas and innovations
by CSIR. They awarded me with cash prize.
How did you generate an interest for science?
I used to live in a village. There, I would always stare at the stars and moon. I would wonder how they are providing us light? This curiosity
instigated a desire to learn cosmology. Moreover, in school, I had to think of more ideas for the science project competitions. Eventually, the interest for science developed. The awards also encouraged me a lot.
Who inspired you the most?
Of course, it is none other than late APJ Abdul Kalam. Sadly, I couldn’t get a chance to meet him. But, he will be my source of inspiration forever.
What are future plans?
It is my deepest desire to be a cosmologist
