Bhubaneswar: The 10th edition of the India International Down Syndrome Conference (IIDSC) will be held from September 17 to 20, bringing together families, medical professionals, educators, experts, self-advocates and organisations from across India and beyond.
Organised by the Down Syndrome Federation of India (DSFI), the four-day conference marks a decade of efforts to create awareness, strengthen family support and promote inclusion and empowerment of persons with Down syndrome.
Under the leadership of DSFI president Surekha Ramachan dran, IIDSC has evolved into a platform where scientific knowledge, professional expertise and lived experiences come together.
Over the years, the conference has also increasingly highlight ed the voices and abilities of persons with Down syndrome, recognising them as active participants and self-advocates.
A key highlight of this year’s conference will be the participation of around 100 persons with Down syndrome at a single venue, described by the organisers as a first-of-its-kind gathering in the state.
The self-advocates will participate in discussions and sessions con cerning their lives and futures and showcase their talents through music, dance, art and cultural performances.
The conference will also have an international dimen sion with the participation of Asia Pacifi c Down Syndrome Federation (APDSF) president T R Narayanaswamy as a special guest.
DSFI is a founding member of APDSF, which works to strengthen collaboration, advocacy and support for persons with Down syndrome and their families across the Asia-Pacifi c region.
The 10th edition is dedicat ed to the spirit and journey of Babli Ramachandran, daughter of Surekha.
A swimmer, yoga practitioner, dancer and self-advocate, Babli’s journey has inspired families and highlighted the possibilities that emerge when persons with Down syn drome receive opportunities, support and encouragement.
The programme will feature expert panel discussions, in dividual consultations, work shops, interactive sessions, cul tural evenings and commemorative sessions. Discussions will cover healthcare, education, employment, sports, indepen dentliving and social inclusion.
The inaugural ceremony is expected to be attended by Youth and Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj as the chief guest. Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21.
With timely healthcare, early intervention, education, opportunities and social inclusion, persons with Down syndrome can lead fulfilling lives and contribute meaningfully to their families and communities.
