Jayapur: A Class V student died allegedly after being assaulted by the head master (HM) of a government school in Koraput district.
The deceased was identified as Ganga Jani, a student of PM-SHRI Upgraded High School at Gadapadar under Jayapur block. The matter came to light after the deceased’s father lodged a complaint at the Sadar police station in Jayapur.
Demanding the arrest of headmaster Dilip Panda, Ganga’s relatives and villagers surrounded the Sadar police station and staged a sit-in. Police registered a case (308/26) and launched an investigation.
According to the complaint, Ganga was staying in the hostel of the PM-SHRI Upgraded High School in Jayapur block. His father, Tin Jani, came to the hostel Sunday after learning that his son was unwell. Ganga informed his father that Panda had assaulted him Friday and Saturday and kept him in the hostel.
He also alleged that the headmaster abused him using casteist slurs and kicked him in the chest with his boot. After Ganga complained of feeling unwell, his father took him to the district headquarters hospital in Jayapur, where he underwent treatment but succumbed to his ailment Wednesday night.
