Khordha: A Class-X student of Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya (OAV) Bhakarsahi, Balipatna, drowned in a pond near Chintamani Vidya Niketan in Narangarh while bathing after arriving in the area to participate in a district-level sports competition Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Arnab Sahu. According to reports, Sahu was with other students for the district-level sporting event when he went to bathe in the pond Monday morning. He reportedly slipped and fell into deep water.
He was rescued and rushed to Khordha Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, the district education officer recommended the suspension of Sunil Panda, a physical education teacher at Balipatna Girls High School and the in-charge of sports activities in Balipatna block.
The district education officer also issued show-cause notices to the headmaster of the concerned school and district sports officer Dilip Modi, seeking explanations over the incident.
Sahu’s body has been kept at the Khordha hospital for an autopsy.
Family members have also alleged that negligence by the district education department contributed to the incident and demanded action against those responsible.
