Bhubaneswar, Oct 9: The department of women and child welfare has directed an inspection of houses built under Swadhar Greh scheme in each district.
Swadhar Greh is a Central-government aided scheme aimed at providing rehabilitative services to women and girls rendered homeless due to family discord, crime, violence, mental stress, social ostracism or are being forced into prostitution.
The department has written to district collectors, asking them to inspect homes and short-stay homes built under the scheme.
The letter from the director of social welfare R P Singh states: “According to the new guidelines, all short stay homes and Swadhar stand renamed as Swadhar Greh with immediate effect and [will continue] to operate under new guidelines. You are requested to review the functioning and need of such houses and recommend further continuation.” Two months ago the Union government had written to all states to comply with the new guidelines.
Under the programme, each district of each state is to build one Swadhar Greh. Big cities can have more than one such facility.  Girls under 18 and boys under eight can be accommodated in such shelter homes.
