Bhubaneswar, Jan 6: The Utkal University hogged headlines yet again Tuesday with the PG council chairman registering a complaint with Sahid Nagar police that a student had manhandled him in his chamber.
PG council chairman GK Panda said he and a few hostellers were discussing a campus problem when a student of journalism department picked up a chair and tried to hit him.
“Sanjay Mallick, a journalism course student, tried to hit me with a chair. But, other students present in my chamber, thwarted his attempt,” claimed Panda.
The PG council chairman, however, rubbished the claims of a few regional dailies that he was seriously hurt in the incident.
“The issue was blown out of proportion by some media houses,” he stressed.
On being asked why the issue of outsiders residing on the university campus was not being resolved, Panda said the matter is of serious concern but it cannot be solved immediately.
College sources said the things went uglier due to the presence of students affiliated to different political parties.
Sanjay Mallick, however, said the administration was hand-in-glove with outsiders and it was allowing them to stay on the campus. “A few students thrashed us with chairs when we protested over their unauthorised stay on the campus,” Mallick said.
Meanwhile, the police said they were investigating the matter and would take action against the wrongdoers.
