Cong names 3 to LS, 17 to Assembly

New Delhi: The Central Election Committee of All India Congress nominated candidates for Cuttack, Sambalpur and Jajpur Lok Sabha constituencies and 17 Assembly constituencies in the state.

The party has chosen to field senior leader Panchanan Kanungo from Cuttack, Sarat Patnaik from Sambalpur and Manas Jena  from Jajpur Lok Sabha seat.

Pradesh Congress Committee president Niranjan Patnaik, who has been nominated for Ghasipura Assembly seat, has already filed his papers for the seat Tuesday, before the announcement of his name. The party fielded student leader Itish Pradhan from Bhubaneswar North.

A day after nominating former chief minister late Janaki Ballabh Patnaik’s son Prithvi Ballav Patnaik for Begunia Assembly, the party withdrew the name and nominated Pradeep Sahoo.

Hindol, Kamakhyanagar, Baramba, Pipili, Begunia, Sambalpur, Ghasipura, Cuttack Choudwar, Cuttack Sadar, Jayadev, Bhubaneswar North, Bhubaneswar Central and Chilika Assembly constituencies will go to polls in the third phase, April 23.

Balasore, Dharmasala, Jajpur and Paradeep Assembly constituencies will exercise franchise as part of the fourth phase polls April 29. Polling will be held for Cuttack and Sambalpur Lok Sabha constituencies April 23 and Jajpur April 29.

The party has, so far, declared candidates for 128 Assembly constituencies and 18 Lok Sabha seats.

The Congress has an alliance with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in Mayurbhanj, with CPI in Aska and with CPM in Bhubaneswar.

According to party sources, the CEC was considering the candidature of Panchanan Kanungo and Bijaylaxmi Sahoo for Cuttack, Manas Jena and Alok Behera for Jajpur and Amar Pradhan and Sarat Patnaik for Sambhalpur.

Notably, voting for constituencies under Phase III will be held April 23 while for constituencies under Phase IV will go for polls April 29.

  4. Jajpur                     : Santosh Kumar Nanda
  5. Hindol                      : Trinath Behera
  6. Kamakhyanagar       : Bhabani Sankar Moahapatra
  7. Paradeep                 : Arindam Sakel
  8. Baramba                  : Bobby Mohanty
  9. Pipili                         : Yudhister Samantary
  10. Sambalpur                : Dr Ashwani Pujari
  11. Ghasipura                 : Niranjan Patnaik
  12. Cuttack-Choudwar    : Jagdish Mohanty
  13. Cuttack-Sadar            : Abhishek Mahanada
  14. Jayadev                      : Sukanta Tiadi Bhoi
  15. Bhubaneswar Central : Rajib Patnaik
  16. Bhubaneswar North    : Itish Pradhan
  17. Chilika                         : Pradeep Swain.
