Bhubaneswar: The conjoined twins from Kandhamal, Jaga and Balia, were separated by a surgery at the AIIMS New Delhi Wednesday.
Informing this to the media Health Minister Pratap Jena said the phase II cranial separation surgery of the twins began Wednesday at around 9 am and the twins were separated after a 11-hour operation.
The twins are stable after the surgery, the minister said.
Earlier Wednesday, the twins were taken to the operation theatre (OT) at 6 am and after arranging the necessary clinical arrangements, the team of experts began the operation.
Meanwhile, Jena said the surgery would continue for another 12 hours till 9 am or 10 am Thursday.
He also said that after completion of the surgery the twins will be kept under observation for
72 hours.
The 27 month-old twins hailing from a poor family in the Milipada village of Phiringia block in tribal-dominated Kandhamal district were admitted in AIIMS July 13.
The first phase surgery to separate the twins was completed successfully August 29. During the 20-hour surgery, a team of doctors, including 20 specialists and a Japanese expert, performed the surgery to separate their veins.
The second phase operation was delayed as the health condition of Jaga was not satisfactory.
The Orissa government had also sanctioned `1 crore from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) for the treatment of the twins. In the meantime, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated the team of doctors on this success of the second phase surgery and prayed for speedy recovery of the twins.
