Controversy clouds Neymar’s PSG move

Barcelona: Neymar’s transfer to French club Paris Saint-German (PSG) has run into rough weather with the La Liga federation formally rejecting Thursday the euro 222 milion that the player paid as transfer fee. Neymar needs to pay the amount to the federation to free himself from his current Barcelona contract.

Neymar’s lawyer Juan de Dio Crespo had deposited the cheque with the federation, but La Liga president Javier Tebas said that it has not been accepted. A statement from the La Liga said: We can confirm that the lawyers of the player have come to La Liga to deposit the cheque as per the rule, and that it has been rejected.”

Neymar flew Wednesday to Porto for his medicals with PSG’s Portuguese sporting director Antero Henrique. However, he has delayed his arrival in Paris until Friday. With the situation turning ugly, he may not be able to turn out in PSG colours in their Ligue 1 opener Saturday against Amiens.

Tebas had earlier claimed he would not accept the clause because of the doubts over PSG’s financing. “In terms of PSG, it is a clear case of financial doping, with the club and the state. PSG’s accounts show that they have a larger commercial income than Real Madrid and Manchester United, which is to say that the value of their brand is greater than those clubs. Well, that is impossible,” he has been quoted as saying by Spanish sports daily ‘AS’.
