Bhawanipatna: Police Monday arrested a havildar on the charge of killing his wife over dowry and hanging her body from a ceiling fan with a saree to show it as a case of suicide at Mandarabagichapada under Sadar police limits in Kalahandi district.
The accused was identified as Ipsit Nayak (37), an APR havildar with the district police, and the deceased as Rajeshwari Nayak (27).
Acting on a complaint by Rajeshwari’s brother Bikash Ranjan Munda, police registered a case and made the arrest.
Rajeshwari’s body was found hanging in her bedroom May 27 under mysterious circumstances. In the presence of magistrate, the town police had seized the body. When contacted, town police IIC Satyanarayan Pradhan said, “An investigation is on and Nayak would be produced in court Tuesday.”
However, Nayak refuted the allegations of murder. “I never pressurized her for dowry. She was getting upset over silly family disputes and took the extreme step.” he said.
