Puri, March 24: A woman has complained to superintendent of police Asish Kumar Singh a police official had assaulted her son mercilessly.
Complainant Monorama Patnaik of Gundicha Vihar alleged that the SP did not take action against the police official and instead termed her son as a known criminal.
The complainant said her son Pratyush (26), a social activist, had picked up a quarrel with an autorickshaw driver during haggling over the fare sought by the driver.
Meanwhile, inspector-in-charge of beach police Pravat Kumar Mallick was riding through the area on his motorcycle when he intervened. As the duo did not stop fighting, the inspector lost his cool and began assaulting them. While the auto-driver managed to escape, Pratyush was subjected to torture in the hands of the IIC, sources said.
“The IIC then took my son to the district headquarters hospital as he was bleeding profusely. He then brought him back to the police station before he recovered completely,” alleged Monorama. “They forwarded him to the court after registering a case.”
Pratyush’s counsel Priyadarshan Patnaik said the auto-rickshaw driver also told the court the inspector had assaulted Pratyush with an iron rod.
When asked, Mallick brushed aside the allegations saying someone else might have beaten up the youth.
The SP said he had directed the DSP to probe the matter. Action will be taken after obtaining the probe report.”
