Cuttack: Even as the failure of police to crack the brutal murder of a 28-year-old youth has raised several questions regarding the investigation, the police Sunday went on a marathon questioning to crack the case.
A finance executive, Nirjhar Behera alias Little of Kapaleswar area in Choudwar police limits was found in a pool of blood near Birupa barrage just three days before his marriage and later declared dead at SCB Medical College and Hospital January 8.
The police Sunday questioned 16 persons, including the owner of a fish stall situated near the crime scene, some fishermen, security guards deployed at Birupa barrage and some locals who usually hangout near the barrage. However, rumours are doing the round that the local residents are afraid of making any statement, as some dreaded local criminals are said to be involved in the crime.
Sources said the police are taking forward the investigation by tracking the location of Behera’s mobile. The police traced the location of the cell phone in Choudwar and its adjacent areas and carried out a massive search to locate it. The police carried out search near Birupa barrage, Agrahat, ground near Choudwar jail, Mandapada and Gurudijhatia area for six hours, but could not locate Behera’s mobile.
On the other hand, police suspect that some local criminals were involved in the murder and they have already fled to other state after executing the crime. Besides, the police also did not rule out the involvement of an outside gang in the crime. A special squad of police led by a sub-inspector of Jagatpur police station has also visited Secunderabad to probe the case.
As Behera was found in a pool of blood near Birupa barrage gate, the police examined some CCTV footages, which were installed half-a-kilometre from the crime scene. Besides, the police are also inquiring about details of specific four-wheelers to crack the case.
Speaking about the investigation, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Akhileshvar Singh said, “We have got some clues related to the assailants. We suspect the murderers fled to another state. A special squad has gone to Secunderabad and is inquiring into the case. We are hopeful of nabbing the criminals at the earliest. There were some contact killers among the assailants.”
