Cops seek remand of 2 accused

Cuttack: A day after classifying the atrocious burning of a Class X girl in Kalahandi district as red-flag case, the Crime Branch Monday sought remand of two accused, one of them a minor, in the crime.
The CB appealed to the judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) court in Narla to allow them to take the accused on a five-day remand. The court is expected to consider the CB plea Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a forensic clues team visited the spot and inquired into the matter. The team collected charred clothes of the victim and examined the spot. A four-member team constituted by the Crime Branch questioned a few neighbours of the victim about the incident.
“The neighbours said the accused took the victim to the backyard of her house after gagging her and poured kerosene on her before setting her afire and fled. The victim was rescued after thorough search. Efforts are on to nab other accused,’’ special DG (Crime) Bijay Kumar Sharma said.
“A kerosene bottle used in the crime will be seized. After interrogating the accused on remand we can throw light on the mystery behind the crime,” Sharma added.
The CB also recorded statements of the victim’s parents at Ispat General Hospital, where the victim is undergoing treatment.
A three-member team questioned the victim’s parents as to why and under which circumstances the accused tried to burn the minor girl. The team also collected papers related to the treatment of the victim and recorded statements of doctors and nurses, Sharma said.
