Cuttack: A move by the government to connect senior police officials with the public through social media for quickly addressing complaints has failed to produce results as the social media accounts of many senior police officials are inactive since months.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had asked police officers to open accounts on Facebook and Twitter for accepting people’s grievances and spreading awareness on traffic rules and other issues. Subsequently, police headquarters had sent circulars to inspectors general, deputy inspectors general, superintendents of police and senior officials of the commissionerate police to open social media accounts April 4.
Police officials were told to open accounts on Facebook and Twitter. As per the direction, police officials were supposed to upload data on criminals, meetings with people and awareness programmes. Police officials were also advised to accept public complaints through the social media and take action. “Police officials have not uploaded any updates in their accounts for months. Moreover, they are yet to accept requests sent by commoners. The last update to the Facebook page of Cuttack DCP was made September 28,” claimed a social activist.
DCP Akhileswar Singh said he will take steps to keep in touch with people through his social media accounts. “We will update our Facebook and Twitter pages every day,” Singh added.
