Kendrapara: Kendrapara Sadar police united two lovers by solemnising their marriage at the police station.
IIC Kabuli Barik of Kendrapara Sadar Police Station said Bablu Guru, a 22-year-old youth and resident of Beguniapada of Gopalpur under Mahanga police station, was in love with one Surekha Behera, 19, of Jaripada in Angulai. Their relationship started with a missed call.
Three days back, Bablu Guru called Surekha and both of them went to Paradip to see Viswakarma Puja.
Later, Surekha stayed with Bablu, who has been working in a Bangalore-based private company, and spent the night with him. Bablu had a physical relationship with the girl and he promised to marry her.
Meanwhile, the girl’s family lodged an FIR alleging that their daughter had fled with Bablu Guru. Sadar Police registered a ‘missing person’ case and started an inquiry. Bablu Guru dropped the girl at Angulai Monday and left.
The girl, instead of returning to her house, stayed at her relative’s house. Later, the girl, with the help of Mamatamayee Samal, a woman activist-cum-lawyer, informed the police about her return.
Bablu, after coming to know from his girlfriend that her family had lodged an FIR against him, contacted the Kendrapada Sadar Police station and urged the latter to solemnise their marriage, IIC Kabuli Barik said.
As both of them were adults and both the girl and the youth had informed the police that they have decided to marry, the IIC informed the matter to the girl’s family as well as Bablu Guru’s father.
The girl in her statement told the police that she was in love with Bablu and had gone with him of her own free will.
Though the girl’s family agreed to give their daughter’s hand to Bablu, his parents did not accept the proposal. Bablu told the IIC that he would marry the girl even without his parents’ consent.
The IIC informed this to his senior officer and the latter gave the green signal for solemnising the marriage at the police station. The marriage was eventually solemnised in the presence of the police and a lawyer Tuesday evening.
The marriage was solemnised as part of Ama Police (community policing) launched to make the police people-friendly by maintaining a rapport with the public, said IIC Barik.
