Bhubaneswar: The commissionerate police Thursday launched a probe into the alleged suicide of a research scholar of Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT), who was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her rented house at Bhagabat Sandhan under Mancheswar police station limits.
The deceased, Subhalaxmi Acharya (34), was reportedly on a video call with a friend of hers in Nagpur, Chirantan Samantray, and had broadcast her alleged suicide to him in real time. Samantray had called up the commissionerate police from Nagpur to inform that Acharya had made a suicide attempt while on a video call with him.
Mancheswar police have sent summons to Samantray for questioning as he was the first person to inform police about the incident, said sources. Police, however, did not confirm about the summons and only said that the investigation is on and that nothing can be revealed at this stage. An officer said a police team may leave soon for Nagpur, if required, to question Samantray.
Acharya’s mobile phone was found kept upright on a window sill when police found her hanging from the ceiling Tuesday night.
After receiving the call from Nagpur, Mancheswar police officials rushed to Acharya’s house on the second floor of the building between 11.30 pm and midnight and broke into the house.
Acharya was married for the past 11 years, but she was separated from her husband four years ago following a marital discord, said police sources. PNN
