Berhampur: A hardcore criminal died while another was grievously injured in a police encounter near the Baghua forests under Buguda police limits in Ganjam district Saturday night.
Police said the criminals were deceased Srikant Rana from Bharatpur area of Bhubaneswar and injured Gouri Shankar Swain from Mudulipali in Bhanjanagar. They were involved in several cases of extortion, loot, kidnapping and bombing.
A special team had been formed to zero in on the movement of the two criminals. Acting on a tip-off, a police team surrounded the criminals while they were allegedly hatching a loot plan in the Baghua forests. Sensing the movement of the police, the two opened fire and tried to escape.
The police retaliated with fire, in which the two sustained bullet injuries on their legs and fell down unconscious. The police team rushed them to the Buguda government hospital. After preliminary treatment, they were shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. Rana died while on treatment in MKCG.
Police seized an Apache bike, two pistols, four live bombs and hand gloves from their possession. The condition of Swain was stated to be critical.
