Thuamul Rampur: Unemployment among youths in mining-affected areas of Kalahandi has reportedly triggered an exodus of workers to Keralam in search of better livelihood opportunities, raising questions over the availability of local employment.
Despite large-scale bauxite extraction from the Baphlamali hills and the revenue generated from mining, unemployed youths from the affected areas are reportedly leaving for Keralam to support their families.
Workers from villages under Thuamul Rampur block, as well as neighbouring Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Koraput districts, reportedly gather at Thuamul Rampur every Tuesday before leaving for Keralam.
A private bus bearing registration number KL-42-07956 was reportedly seen carrying more than 50 workers to Keralam Tuesday.
Local youths and political workers alleged that despite the region being covered under the District Mineral Foundation (DMF), adequate employment opportunities have not been created for local residents.

No permanent employment opportunities have been created for unemployed youths during the 24-year BJD rule or under the present BJP government, locals alleged.
They also alleged that Utkal Alumina has failed to provide basic employment opportunities, including security and sanitation jobs, to local youths. Delays in MGNREGA work and other local employment, coupled with low wages, are reportedly prompting workers to migrate to Keralam, where they can earn between Rs 800 and Rs 1,800 per day.
Locals warned that continued migration could lead to the region losing a significant portion of its young workforce unless industries and sustainable employment opportunities are created.
The migration has also raised concerns over the safety and welfare of workers. Several migrant workers have reportedly died in other states over the past two years, while some remain missing. Their families have filed missing-person reports with local police but have allegedly received limited assistance.
Amid these concerns, BDO said the matter would be brought to the attention of the Labour Department. However, Thuamul Rampur police officials could not be reached for comment.
