Post News Network, Cuttack, March 11: Oriya Bhasha Diwas was observed at the Red Cross Bhawan here Wednesday. Speaking at the function, organised jointly by the Orissa Sahitya Academy and the District Cultural Council, district collector, Nirmal Chandra Mishra highlighted the glorious history and heritage of Oriya language and called upon the youth to cherish the language and preserve it. “The reason for the 2500 year-old Oriya language to get classical status is due to the fact that it is not only an ancient language but has also shaped the history of the state in various ways”, he said. Eminent litterateur and critic, Babaji Charan Patnaik stressed the need for more publications in Oriya language and said that the time has come to understand the need to preserve the rich heritage of the language. He urged the district collector to work towards ensuring the preservation of words used in Oriya conversation in the different areas of the district.
Member of the Orissa Sahitya Academy, Dr Bijayananda Singh said that Oriya has made a name for itself across the world in the literary circles. “Oriya is the most pleasant sounding language and should be promoted in the literary circles with more vigour and enthusiasm”, Singh said.
