Cycling life with hard work ...and bit of luck

Banarpal: Dinabandhu Sahoo has earned a name in Angul district’s Banarpal block as an honest cycle mechanic.

The 55-year-old Dinabandhu, who has a cycle repairing shop at Banarpal market, runs his small family comprising his wife and son with the earnings from his shop.

A resident of Jhajiribahal village under Banarpal block, Dinabandhu is content with his daily earnings and has never been jealous of his classmates who lead a richer life than him.

“I was born in a poor family. My family’s financial problems forced me to quit my education when I was in Class V. And when my classmates were going to college, I shared the burden of my family. I had to work to help my father run the family,” he said adding, “I have none to curse for what I am today. I am content with whatever I am earning as per my qualification. There is no reason for being jealous.”

A Class V dropout, Dinabandhu believes in hard work and luck. “What someone will get and what someone will be are predestined by their luck. And at the same time, if one works harder, it will never go in vain, ” he philosophised, adding,  “As I am not educated that much to get a government or private job, I chose cycle repairing to feed my family.”

In 1975, he requested Jogeswar Sahoo, a cycle mechanic who had a shop near Banarpal School, to employ him as an assistant.

Putting his heart and soul into his work, Dinabandhu soon gained experience and expertise in cycle repairing.

Later, Dinabandhu himself opened a repairing shop in Banarpal market and over the years he became an expert in his profession. Later, he got married.
