Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Wednesday said Cyclone Kyant over the Bay of Bengal is unlikely to make landfall but coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Orissa can expect a wet Diwali.
“Cyclonic storm Kyant over east-central Bay of Bengal moved further west-southwestwards and lay centred 450 km southeast of Gopalpur, 520 km east-southeast of Vishakhapatnam and 730 km east-northeast of Machilipatnam. The cyclone is most likely to move west-southwestwards towards west central Bay of Bengal during next 72 hours,” the IMD said.
IMD cyclone warning division chief M Mohapatra said Kyant was unlikely to make landfall, which means it will not hit the coast. A cyclone making a landfall usually wreaks havoc and causes damage to life and property.
The IMD, however, said coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Orissa will witness rainfall, especially during the Diwali weekend. Kyant is expected to fade into deep depression October 28.
“Light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at many places in south Orissa and north coastal Andhra Pradesh on 27 and 28. Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely in south coastal Andhra Pradesh October 28 to 30 and over north coastal Tamil Nadu October 29 to 31,” the Met added.
Sea condition will be “rough to very rough” along and off south Orissa October 27. Similar conditions will persist off Andhra Pradesh coasts during October 27 to 30, it said.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea off Andhra Pradesh coasts from October 27 onwards. The IMD has also hoisted distant warning signal number-2 at all ports of the state.
Meanwhile, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradipta Mohapatra said, “Cyclone Kyant will pose no threat to life and property in the state as it will cause sporadic rainfall in some parts of coastal districts. The situation today is much better for Orissa as compared to yesterday. Going by the trend of the cyclone, there will be no threat to Orissa as it is moving away from its coast.”
