Bhubaneswar, May 26: Grandmaster Debashis Das, defeated Ziatdinov Raset of USA in the fourth round to remain in the third position in the ongoing KIIT International Chess Festival, here Saturday.
Apart from Debashis, IM Swayams Mishra and Rakesh Kumar Jena registered convincing victories over their opponents. Swayams defeated statemate Utkal Ranjan Sahoo in a keenly-contested game while Rakesh Jena overcame Vaibhav Mishra. In other matches played on the day, Siddhant Mohapatra, Rakesh Kumar Nayak and Asirbad Swain drew their respective matches.
It was a bad day for WFM Kiran Manisha Mohanty, Rajesh Nayak and Gour Hari Mohapatra as all of them lost their respective matches. Turning her fate with two back-to-back wins after losing in first round, Kiran Manisha went down to Ravi Teja. She is currently joint fifth with two points in her kitty in the Elite category.
MR Lalith Babu is currently on top in the category at the end of round four with four points after he defeated Aravind Chithambaram. But the most astonishing game of the day was between third seed GM Aleksandrov Aleksej and IM Diptayan Ghosh as the latter fought bravely to earn a draw.
Meanwhile, in the Platinum category, Orissa challengers Aparajita Gochhikar and Sunyasakta Satpathy lost their respective matches after the completion of the eighth round.
Aparajita slipped to sixth position after her defeat against Mohammed Dilshad while Sunyasakta on the other hand lost to another Orissa prodigy Susobhit Das. Both are now placed in the joint sixth position along with Smaraki Mohanty and Saina Salonika, who defeated Anchit Vyas and Saye Srrezza Potturi respectively.
