Daughter-in-law set on fire after rape

Bargaon/Baripada: A 23-year-old woman was set on fire after rape allegedly by her father-in-law at Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj district, police said Saturday.
The incident took place Friday night when the woman was alone at her in-law’s house. The woman sustained about 80 per cent burn injuries and admitted to Tata Memorial Hospital in Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.
As per the FIR lodged by the woman’s father at Rairangpur police station, her father-in law Ramgopal allegedly attacked and outraged her modesty when all other members of the family were out of their home.
As the victim threatened to report the matter to the relatives, the accused set her ablaze by sprinkling kerosene, the complaint said.
‘‘Accused Ramgopal Khemka, 55, a builder and a businessman, has been arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim’s parents. We have begun an investigation into the incident. A case has been registered against him under various sections of IPC,’’ said Mayurbhanj additional superintendent of police (ASP) Ashok Patnaik.
The woman hails from Bargaon in Sundargarh district. According to the case diary, she was married to Khemka’s son in April, 2015. The couple has a five-month-old daughter. Khemka reportedly had set his evil eyes on his daughter-in-law from the time of her marriage with his son.
He had allegedly forced her to maintain physical relationship with him.
