Bhubaneswar, August 7: Around 300 weavers were awarded during the State level national handloom day observed by Boyanika and the Handloom, textile and handicrafts department at Soochana Bhawan for their excellent contribution for the development of Orissa handloom industry here Monday. Attending the event as chief guest, handloom, textile and handicraft Minister Snehangini Chhuria highlighted about the various schemes being carried out by the state government for the development of weavers in the state. Orissa is known for its rich handloom designs like Khandua, Bomkai, Vichitrapuri, Jamdani and Sambalpuri. We have been trying to give self employment opportunities to these weavers, she added. During the event, an online portal ‘Online Cash Transaction’ was inaugurated by the Minister which would help easy transaction of cash sanctioned by the state government for the weavers. Speaking about the portal, Chhuria said, “All the weavers from the state have been connected with the portal. Now the weavers who are entitled to get pension under Baristha Bunakar Sahayak Yojna will get their pension online. The amount will be credited on their accounts. Through this portal they can get the status reports and other information relating to Government schemes.” While around 300 weavers were awarded Monday, the department is also planning to award around 8000 weavers in coming days. “Apart from this, the department plans to impart extra skill
training to weavers. Health insurance facilities and solar lanterns would also be provided to all the weavers. A hub will be created where the final products of the weavers will be sold. The apex society will be felicitated with emarketing facilities. Proper housing will be provided to weavers, who do not have proper shelters” said Chhuria. Three weavers’ cooperative societies were awarded for the highest sale turnover, which were, Utkal ECT Tantabai Sahayog Samiti Limited, Nuapatna, Cuttack, Janta Vashtralaya Tantabai Sahayog Samiti Limited from Bargada and Kalyanimai Tantabai Sahayog Samiti Limited, Nuapatna, Cuttack. Cash awards were also given to three weavers’ cooperative societies for the completing 75 years of service successfully. Gauragaon Prathamik Tanatabai Sahayog Samiti Limited from Hatisara, Kotpola Tantabai Sahayog Samiti Limited from Khurda and Cotton Tantabai Sahayog Samiti Limited from Berhampur were awarded Rs 1 lakh each. Amongst the various dignitaries, MP Prasanna Pattasani, MLA Bijay Kumar Mohanty, MLA Priyadarshi Mishra were also present.
