New Delhi, Nov 21: After being mired into a controversy over change of name of the Dayal Singh Evening College, one of the oldest college of the Delhi University into Vande Mataram College, several teachers working here and students of the college are now baffled.

A number of teachers in this college seemed irked with the raging controversy and claimed that this is a deliberate attempt to divert the attention of the media and the nation from other issues relating to the educational institution started in 1959.

According to the teachers and students from the college, two months ago the Dayal Singh College and the Dayal Singh Evening College, which shared several common infrastructure and differed only in timings, started having classes at the same timing leading to tussle between the Dayal Singh College students and from students from the later. Some protests were also organized for the same.

As the Evening College stopped being at evening, its named has now been proposed to be named as Vande Matarm College.

“This is a tactics to divert the attention from other problems of the college. The college infrastructure is not feasible to hold parallel classes of both the colleges. This is to a great extent hampering the studies of both the college students,” said Professor PK Parihar, President, Teachers’ Association of the Dayal Singh College.

Parihar also cited the Transfer Deed between the Dayal Singh Trust and the Delhi University when the properties of the trust in the form of the institution was transferred to Delhi university without any charge but with some mutual understanding like not changing the name of the Dayal Singh College, which he claimed have been violated if it becomes Vande Mataram College.

Sadaf Khan, student of BA (History) from the college said, “The whole controversy was given an impetus so that people forget the main issue. People very well know that no one can raise objections to the word ‘Vande Mataram’ and those can dare could easily be termed as ‘anti-nationals’ and thus voice of dissent could easily be killed this way.”

However Diwakar Yadav, Student President of the Evening College said, “I don’t think change of the name is any issue as a name was bound to change as the evening classes of the so called Evening College has come to an end. We in fact feel proud of the change of name.”
