Berhampur: Incidents of passengers coming under the wheels while alighting from trains, people being hit by trains while jaywalking tracks and people committing suicide by jumping before moving trains are taking place frequently under Berhampur GRP limits in Ganjam district.

As many as 197 unnatural death cases were registered in last three years.

The circumference of the Berhampur GRP is 120 kilometres, starting from Chilika railway station in Khurda district to Gunupur, covering Ganjam and Gajapati districts. A total of 197 unnatural deaths were registered at the GRP police station between 2018 and 2020.

In 2018, as many as 73 unnatural death cases were registered. Of them, 28 are suicide cases. Of the remaining 45 cases, 18 people were killed after being hit by trains while crossing the tracks, 20 people accidentally came under the wheels and died while getting off their trains and seven people died after falling from trains due to some reasons.

Similarly, 67 unnatural death cases were registered in 2019. Of them, 28 people died by suicide by jumping before moving trains, 18 people were killed while crossing the tracks and 21 passengers were accidentally killed while getting off trains.

As many as 57 death cases were registered in 2020. Due to the pandemic, passenger trains were cancelled. As the number of daily positive cases has started declining, train service has resumed, albeit partially. In spite of this, 45 cases have been registered till August 12 this year. And the number of cases in 2021 is likely to cross 100-mark by the end of the year.
