Bhubaneswar, May 27: Grandmanster (GM) Debashis Das comfortably defeated Ritviz Parab to move up a place to third, while IM Swayams Mishra slipped one place to the same position after he was defeated by GM Sandipan Chanda of West Bengal in the seventh round in the ongoing KIIT International Chess Festival here Thursday.

Debashis, who lost his earlier round, salvaged some pride when he confidently beat Parab. But Swayam’s hope for making it to the joint top position suffered a huge blow when he lost to much higher ranked player Sandipan.

Among others, Rakesh Jena, Rakesh Kumar Nayak and Vaibhav Mishra won their respective matches of the seventh round. Rajesh Nayak, Sidhant Mohapatra and Utkal Ranjan Sahoo eked out draws in their seventh round matches. However, Kiran Manisha Mohanty and Ashirbad Swain again lost to their opponents.

In the Premium category which was started Thursday, Four Orissa players namely Ashok Kumar Jaju, Bishal Patnaik, Biswahari Sahu and Ankita Sahoo are topping the table with three points apiece. Ashok defeated Debaruna Nayak, Niyati Parekh and S Sathya Narayaanan while Bishal overcame Priyansh Das, Devansh Arav Dash and Sumit Samantray in their respective matches.
